Lauren Johns

3rd year Geography student, Swansea University

Biography

Lauren grew up in South Wales, attending Pontarddulais Comprehensive School before continuing her education at Gower College Swansea. At Gower College she completed A levels in Geography, Biology, World Development, and Physical Education, achieving three As and an A*. Whilst at college Lauren was invited to attend an ‘Inspiring Excellence’ course at Villiers park, focusing on Geography. It was this opportunity which confirmed her desire to continue studying geography into higher education, with a particular interest in climate change.

After applying, and successfully receiving offers from five institutions, Lauren chose to study for a BSc in Geography at Swansea University. Lauren was awarded the ‘Sir Halford Mackinder Prize’ for best overall performance in Year 1, and also the departmental prize for ‘Best Overall Performance in Physical Geography’ at Year 2.

Aside from her academic successes, Lauren has a strong passion for student voice, representing her peers as an elected subject representative at all three years of her undergraduate degree. Within this role Lauren works to bridge the gap between staff and students of the department, to enhance the student experience.  Lauren is also heavily involved in Swansea University’s Student Ambassador Scheme, she is currently a Senior Student Ambassador, and also the scheme’s Social Media Secretary. Lauren is an advocate for positive reinforcement and extrinsic motivation, and is currently working to introduce a Student Ambassador of the Month award to recognize the hard work of those student ambassadors who are currently working remotely.

Lauren enjoys dancing in her spare time and is trained in the Cecchetti style of classical ballet. Upon joining the dance society at university Lauren branched out into additional styles, and now regularly takes part in a range of both classical and contemporary classes.

Lauren is currently exploring options to continue in academia, applying for masters courses in the field of Geography.
