Wiktoria Ozarek
1st year Medicine student, University of Leeds
Biography
Wiktoria attended Winstanley College in Wigan, where she took A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, English Literature and Polish. Wiktoria has always been motivated to study Medicine. The competitive application process, UKCAT/BMAT and interviews are a challenging journey for all students who apply to study Medicine.
During A-level results day Wiktoria missed out on one grade. Wiktoria had the required grades for a Law degree and got offered to study Law at Liverpool and Keele university as alternative courses. Results day was a difficult decision for Wiktoria, with a personal choice of either studying a “safe” option degree or following her initial ambitions and studying a foundation year with low chances of transferring onto medical school.
Wiktoria decided to reject the Law offers as she realised that there was no purpose in studying a degree she didn’t see herself doing in the future. Wiktoria undertook a Foundation Clinical Sciences/ Medicine at Bradford University, with the possibility to transfer either to Leeds or Sheffield University. Around 180 students attempt to transfer each year with only 20 student places available for transfer. Students are required to achieve 70% overall in their academic year alongside undertaking a BMAT and UKCAT exam and strict interview process.
Wiktoria successfully transferred to Leeds Medical school this academic year. The COVID pandemic made the journey for Wiktoria more challenging with zoom MMI interviews and exams online. However, Wiktoria’s situation proves that if you are strongly motivated you can always find an alternative route to achieve your ambitions.
