Supporting students’ academic transition to university through research-based learning

Tuesday 8 June 2021 11:10 - 12:00
Open to all

Summary

This session will demonstrate to international teachers and advisers the value UK based Higher Education Institutions attribute to research-based learning (RBL) that students undertake before coming to university. During an unprecedented time, which has seen exams cancelled in a number of cases, the virtues of research-based learning have moved to the forefront of consideration in how to effectively prepare those students from all socioeconomic backgrounds for the transition to Higher Education.

There will be evidence from the University of Southampton that examines the impact the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) has had on students’ degree performance and outcomes. The session will highlight how students who have the opportunity to engage in the style of learning that may out-perform their peers. This may include the EPQ but could also be applicable to the Independent or International Project Qualifications (IPQ), IB Extended Essay amongst others.

This breakout session will also consider how universities are responding to these types of qualifications in both admissions policies and outreach schemes designed to encourage students to invest time and energy into projects that will facilitate the development of an invaluable skillset.

Learning outcomes:
  • To recognise how RBL has the potential to facilitate students’ progression beyond school or college level study. This includes smooth academic transition to a higher level of study and also achieving excellent performance at this level.
  • To gain detailed and up-to-date knowledge of Higher Education Institutions’ positions and admissions policies regarding this type of learning.
  • To have an awareness of support mechanisms for staff in delivering these types of qualifications such as that provided by the University of Southampton’s Learn with US Transition Programme.
