Employability at university: How UK universities help students land their “dream job”

Tuesday 8 June 2021 11:10 - 12:00

Summary

"Employability is more than simply gaining employment [...] it involves the development of knowledge, attributes, skills and experience that help individuals gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations." (UUKI Report January 2020).

As international recruitment officers, we encounter an increasing amount of interest in placement years or degrees where work experience is an integral part of the studies. Internship programmes such as DRIVEN at the University of Derby and Students as Researchers at York St John University, are examples of where students can develop their employability skills and graduate attributes to prepare them for the world of work. We will explore these together with colleagues from our university careers services.

During this engaging presentation, we will identify transferable skills and explore case studies to prepare students as they embark on their UK university journey, to ensure they know how to make the most of the careers service and land their dream job upon graduation.

Learning outcomes:
Delegates will learn about:

  • Year in Placement opportunities in the UK
  • How to support students and their employability before starting university
  • How UK universities support students in getting jobs after their degrees
