Student life

You’ll have an unforgettable student experience with hundreds of clubs and societies to try, and endless ways to unwind on campus or in our exciting student-friendly cities. Our Students’ Union is one of the largest in the country.

You’ll join a community of over 25,000 students where you’ll be accepted for who you are, and supported, respected, listened to and valued.

Southampton is a safe, walkable student-friendly city with cycle routes and a University bus service connecting our campuses, halls, the city, stations and airport. If you live in University-owned halls in Southampton, a Unilink bus pass is included in your accommodation fees!

A short bus ride away is Winchester School of Art, our arts campus, in a city with a thriving arts and culture scene that rivals much bigger university towns.

When you arrive we’ll make it as easy as possible for you to settle in. Our Student Hub is open 24/7, 365 days a year, to support you with everything from fees and finance to wellbeing.

South East England is made up of nine counties, with popular student cities in Brighton & Hove, Oxford, Portsmouth, Reading, and Southampton.

The area sees plenty of sunshine and Brighton – the LGBTQ+ capital of the UK – is a student favourite, with tons of quirky shops, cafes, arts, nightlife and watersports.

Moving east into Kent, you'll find the charming towns of Whitstable, Broadstairs, and Margate – all bursting with literary history – plus the iconic landmarks of Dover’s white cliffs and Canterbury Cathedral.

London is an hour or two away for gigs, theatre trips and capital city adventures, while the country’s two largest airports – Heathrow and Gatwick – mean international journeys are easy to get started.

Campus and facilities

The University is based over 8 campuses, with 7 in Southampton and Winchester, and a campus in Malaysia.

Highfield Campus is the academic heart of the University. You’ll spend a lot of time at Highfield, even if your subject is based at a specialist campus. It’s home to our largest library, the Students’ Union, the Student Hub and spaces for study and leisure.

In the centre of a historic city, surrounded by parkland, our Winchester School of Art campus is a creative hub for over 1,500 art and design students.

Our UK campuses are connected easily by public transport, and some are within easy walking distance. If you’re on Highfield campus late, studying or on a night out, the safety bus will drop you home for free.

Over the next few years we’re investing £300m to update our campuses and renovate existing spaces, to ensure that our students have the best possible opportunities and experiences. And to add to our amazing sports facilities, our new sports extension opens this year.
